A gasoline/propane bifuel conversion system produced by AFV Solutions, Inc., recently received a certificate of conformity from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The system is the only EPA-certified propane bifuel system available in the United States for the Ford 4.6 liter engine. It will be sold for installation on the Ford Crown Victoria, Crown Victoria Police, Lincoln Town Car, and Mercury Grand Marquis.

"We chose this Ford engine family for our initial system because the 4.6 liter-equipped Crown Victoria is the fleet vehicle of choice for law enforcement agencies, taxi services, and state and federal government agencies throughout the United States," said AFV Solutions President Jeff Groscost. "Fleet operators that retrofit with our system and purchase bulk propane can substantially reduce their fuel costs, often by up to 40 percent, while increasing their vehicles' longevity and reducing maintenance costs."

The bifuel conversion system passed all the required federal emission and operating standards, and it works with a simple flip of a switch. AFV Solutions designed the system with the hope of offering flexibility for consumers and fleet operators as most propane is domestically produced and widely available.

Groscost added that the company is finalizing gasoline/propane bifuel systems for model year 2004 and 2005 Ford 4.6 liter engines and expects EPA certification of them soon.

According to its Web site, AFV Solutions provides immediate results in terms of fuel economy, a cleaner environment, and cost savings. Located in Mesa, Arizona, the company is also researching ways to obtain a higher ethanol yield than is currently possible, working to create onboard hydrogen generation for vehicle applications, and developing hybrid electric applications.
