In the Spirit of the Olympics — Cyclists Jeff Niermeyer and Marc Wangsgard stopped at the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) carrying a message promoting peace, youth, and the environment. The message has traveled from Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and will be delivered to Mayor Sergio Chiamparino of Torino, Italy.

The sharing of a message from the mayor of the city that hosted the last summer Olympics to the mayor of the next host city has become a tradition. The messages are delivered using minimal or no fossil fuel. Two virtually zero emission Honda sedans, a Civic GX powered by natural gas, and a Civic Hybrid Electric are serving as support vehicles for the volunteer cyclists.

On May 23rd, the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium, headquartered at West Virginia University, launched its newest course – “Clean Air and Energy Independence: An Overview of Alternative Fuels and Advanced Technology Vehicles”. This 2 ½ day training course, designed for automotive technicians, students, and the general public, introduces its participants to various types of alternative fuels and advanced technology vehicles including:
- Ethanol, methanol and synthetic fuels
- Biodiesel
- Natural gas
- Propane
- Hybrid and battery-powered electric vehicles
- Hydrogen and fuel cell powered vehicles
Hybrid technology is a subject of tremendous interest. It is our mission at the NAFTC to explain these types of technologies so they can be understood by everyone.
