From the Office of the Executive DirectorDear Friends: While many of us are enjoying these early summer months, we find ourselves continuing to cringe when pulling in to gas stations across the country to refuel our vehicles. Gasoline prices are still remarkably high and will remain so for the foreseeable future. The good news is that this is a concern on nearly everyone’s mind, which means that solutions to our dependence on foreign oil are being discussed daily. Lawmakers continue to propose legislation they hope holds the answer to our addiction to oil. A bill called the Clean EDGE Act was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate. Its ultimate goal is to reduce the country’s petroleum consumption by 6 million barrels a day by 2020. To learn more, read our eNews story, “Clean EDGE Act Introduced in U.S. Senate.” One bill that is being supported by many, including automobile manufacturers, is the 25x25 Initiative. Heads of Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler met with Congress to ask for assistance in making ethanol more widely available and to back the initiative, which calls for renewable fuels to meet 25 percent of the country’s transportation energy needs by 2025. More information on this bill is in our article, “Auto Executives Meet with Congress.” The NAFTC is moving forward on plans for the 2006 National AFV Day Odyssey, which will be held October 12. There are just a few months to go before this exciting event, which was developed to help educate the public and promote alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles.
