As we enjoy spring and look forward to the warm summer months, elevated gas and oil prices continue to weigh heavily on the minds of many across the country. Despite these record highs at the pump, a new forecast by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts more motorists will be on the highway this summer than last. Our story, “EIA Predicts Summer Gasoline Prices,” provides more information on the forecast.

Gas and oil prices are not just in the thoughts of drivers, but lawmakers as well. Several pieces of legislation have been proposed or passed that promote and encourage alternative fuel use. In the U.S. Senate, the Breaking Our Long-Term Dependence Act was recently introduced, and the State of Washington passed a renewable fuel standard which goes into effect in July. You can read more about the new legislation in this edition.

The alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle industry also is doing its part as it continues to develop new advancements and technology to lift the burden of the high cost of gasoline. For example, articles in this edition of eNews describe a new method for storing liquefied natural gas in undersea salt caverns and detail fuel cell and electric vehicle research projects that are under way.

The issue of record high gas and oil prices is an important one, and alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles are one important solution to lessening America’s dependence on foreign energy.
