As part of its continuing effort to make knowledge of biodiesel available to West Virginians, NAFTC Instructor Rich Cregar traveled to Bethany, West Virginia, on November 10 to deliver the NAFTC Biodiesel Workshop to the students of Bethany College.

Bethany College is a private liberal arts college nestled in the hills of West Virginia north of Wheeling. With a student population of approx. 900, the collegiate specialties include Communications and Education. Students and faculty demonstrated a lively interest in biodiesel as well!

Following the morning presentation, Cregar met with members of the science faculty and student leaders to help devise a plan to involve Bethany in a local biodiesel production and distribution effort. Students were looking for ways to utilize the waste vegetable oil produced by the campus food service, who are feeding three meals per day to about nine hundred students.

It was suggested that one way may be for the school to look at replacing its small fleet of fifteen passenger gasoline-powered vans with diesels. These could then be fueled on biodiesel produced from the school’s waste oil. Students and faculty agreed to pursue development of biodiesel both at the school and within the local community.
