Bio-Consortium Hopes To Shift Energy Reliance From Middle East to Midwest

In April, the Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, Rod Nilsestuen, announced the formation of the North Central Bio-Economy Consortium (NCBEC), a twelve-state collaborative effort between the directors of the State Departments of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Services, and University Agricultural Experiment Stations. The Bio-Consortium will identify and jointly act upon opportunities to ensure the nation's transition toward greater energy independence, utilization of biomass feedstocks, and development of robust bio-economies.

Xcel Energy and NREL Release New Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Study

Xcel Energy, a major U.S. electricity and natural gas company, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have released the results of a six-month study to determine how plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) would affect the State of Colorado if the state saw a massive increase in the use of these vehicles. The study examined electric power grid fluctuations dependent on when and where the cars were charging. Results prove favorable for the PHEVs as Xcel/NREL conclude that the vehicles may reduce the overall expense of ownership as well as eliminate harmful emissions by up to 50 percent with the use of smart-grid technologies.
