Course and Workshop Description
First Responder Safety Training: Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The scene of any vehicle accident is often chaotic, and first responders must work within the constraints of a critical time frame in order to ensure their safety and the safety of accident vehicle occupants. When an accident involves a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), an imperative balance between speed and caution must be achieved as many potential hazards are present. The newness of these vehicles has created an uncertainty, as well as raised concerns, for emergency response personnel. However, if properly trained, first responders will be able to deal with the unique scenarios an HEV can create at the site of an accident.

In an effort to properly educate first responders about hybrid electric vehicle safety, the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) offers first responder safety training. The first available of a forthcoming series, this training is available as a four-hour workshop for first responders or as a two-day course for instructors and provides the needed knowledge and training for first responders who will confront a growing number of automotive accidents involving HEVs as these vehicles become increasingly popular.

This training is available as a four-hour workshop with hands-on learning activities for first responders or as a two-day course for those interested in becoming an instructor of the workshop. The two day instructor workshop open to NAFTC members and pre-approved first responder trainers.
