| Why Take Propane Vehicle Training? Propane, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), vehicles have the range of equivalent gasoline vehicles but the potential for better emissions.
They are on the road today. In fact, LPG vehicles have a longer history and are present in greater numbers than any other vehicles using an alternative fuel. An estimated 350,000 trucks, cars, and industrial vehicles are running on propane. The infrastructure for delivery is well developed, and more and more fleets are taking a second look at propane as a transportation fuel. Also, propane is ideally suited for indoor applications such as forklifts--easily answering the call for better indoor air quality. Yet propane is one of the least understood of the alternative fuels. Clearly there will be a demand for a pool of properly-trained technicians to service and repair these vehicles.
The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium at West Virginia University has developed a thoroughly-researched, instructionally sound, easily-applied training program in propane vehicle components, layout, maintenance, safety, and emissions controls -- all supported by concise materials and hands-on experience.
What You Will Learn
Taught by certified NAFTC instructors, this course will teach you the fundamentals of theory, equipment, safety, and good work practices. In particular, this course will enable you to:

- Describe basic engine operations on gaseous fuels
- Discuss incentives, regulations, and government policies
- Build skills in propane system installation of tanks, regulators, vaporizers, mixers, electrical wiring, and more
- Compare and contrast current manufacturers' systems
- Become adept in proper filling procedures
- Analyze and compare various fuel exhaust emissions
- Describe the safety procedures for vehicles and shop facilities
- Perform steady-state and transient drive cycle tests on dynamometers
- Use a final conversion checklist.
