Top Ten Alternative-Fueled City Fleets SustainLane Government, a leading third-party government source for sustainability metrics, surveyed the fifty largest U.S. cities in 2006 to discover which cities ranked highest in their percentage use of alternative fuels for their individual city fleets. SustainLane looked at the use of biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, compressed and natural gas, electric vehicles, and gas-hybrid vehicles. The use of biodiesel, electric and gas-hybrid vehicles were weighed slightly higher in calculating the survey results.
Leading the nation was Las Vegas, Nevada, with almost 63 percent of the city's fleet using alternative fuels, including 450 vehicles using B20 biodiesel. The city also has a large number of electric hybrids, natural gas, and zero-emission hydrogen vehicles. Honolulu, Hawaii, took second place with 51 percent of its city fleet using alternative fuel. Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Dallas, Texas, rounded out the top five. Complete results were as follows:
Placing in the SustainLane 2007 survey will likely be even more competitive, with many of the top ten cities vowing to have 100 percent alternative-fueled city fleets. Denver, Colorado, currently number six, announced plans last year to convert its entire city fleet to alternative fuel by the end of 2007. Albuquerque, New Mexico, also announced its plans for the same goal. For more information on the survey conducted by SustainLane, visit their Web site (www.sustainlane.us/overview.jsp). |
