Rio Hondo Hosts Alternative Fuels Demonstration Day

Rio Hondo College and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) co-sponsored the Advanced Transportation & Alternative Fuels Demonstration Day at the South Coast AQMD facility in Diamond Bar, California. The event, held on May 11, 2007, focused on important themes including alternative fuel environmental impact, energy independence, educational relevance, and enhanced homeland security.

The Advanced Transportation & Alternative Fuels Demonstration Day was comprised of two educational tracks. The professional track included a session to discuss educational relevance presented by John Frala of Rio Hondo College and a homeland security presentation by Ross Arnold, CTE L.A. County Office of Education. Professionals were also invited to an energy independence discussion lead by Peter Ward of the California Energy Commission and an environmental impact session lead by Steven John of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The student track included career and education opportunities presentation by Miles Rubin, Chairman of Miles Automotive Group. John Frala also spoke to student attendees about educational relevance, and Steve Tomory, also from Rio Hondo College, led an energy independence presentation.

Both professionals and students were given a tour of the South Coast AQMD facility, and the Alternative Fuels Vehicles Showcase took place in the facility parking lot. The showcase included vendor displays as well as giveaways. Lunch was sponsored by American Honda.

Other co-sponsors included the California Department of Education, the Model Pathway Grant, and the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program.
