Hydrogen Vehicles Tour the Nation

Hydrogen-powered vehicles from BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen took part in a trip across the country from August 11 to 23. The Hydrogen Road Tour, presented by the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Hydrogen Association, visited 31 cities in 18 states over a two-week period. People across the United States were given the opportunity to interact with the vehicles and the people developing vehicle technologies.

The fuel cell vehicles traveled roughly 20,000 combined miles from Portland , Maine to Los Angeles, California. The vehicles were fueled with domestically produced hydrogen at regular stops along the way. Notable stops included New York City; Hartford, Connecticut; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Washington, DC; Raleigh / Durham, North Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The hydrogen powered vehicles that were involved in the tour include the following:

  • The BMW Hydrogen Series 7
  • Daimler Mercedes-Benz F-Cell
  • General Motor’s Chevy Equinox FCV
  • Honda FCX Clarity
  • Hyundai Tucson FCV
  • Kia Sportage FCV
  • Nissan X-Trail FCV
  • Toyota Highlander FCHV
  • Volkswagen Touran
  • Tiguan HyMotion

The purpose of the road tour was to demonstrate hydrogen vehicle technology and to promote hydrogen as a realistic solution to pollution and a reliance on foreign oil. The tour showcased the progress that industry and government have made and emphasized the next steps to commercialization while research and development continues. The premise was made that if more automakers invested in hydrogen vehicles, the more likely a fueling infrastructure will be developed to support the technology.
