Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids Previewed at Texas State Fair

General Motors showcased its new Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid at the 2007 Texas State Fair in Dallas, Texas. During the event, visitors to the fair gained a sneak peek of the only two full-sized hybrid SUVs before they arrive in dealer showrooms. The Tahoe and Yukon will be manufactured locally at the GM Arlington Assembly Plant.

Those who purchase either SUV hybrid will see a 30 percent increase in overall fuel economy. The 2008 Tahoe and Yukon will outclass their gasoline-only siblings by delivering 21 mpg in the city in two-wheel drive models – a 50 percent improvement over their 5.3L non-hybrid counterparts and reportedly comparable to the 2.4L-equipped Toyota Camry sedan.

Both the Tahoe and Yukon hybrids sport a commanding 6.0L V-8 engine and are equipped with the GM Active Fuel Management system, which disengages half of the engine's cylinders when full engine power is not needed. The system allows the engine to shut down half of the Vortec V-8's cylinders depending on driving demands to improve fuel economy. A key to reducing fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic is the electric-only propulsion feature, which is available up to 30 mph. Electric power assists the V-8, helping to save fuel during hurried acceleration or additional pulling power.
